TaylorMade Spider Tour Red Putter: Red Hot

If you’re wondering what putter Sergio Garcia used in his thrilling playoff victory over Justin Rose at the Masters, it’s the TaylorMade Spider Tour Red putter.

Former World No 1 Jason Day assisted in the design of the Spider Tour Red and the putter’s colour mimics the abdomen of the highly-venomous Redback spider found in his native Australia. The high MOI mallet has a smooth crown and no sightline, providing a clean alignment system. The short slant neck hosel provides expanded visibility of the face and toe hang, which is not often found on such mallets.

The lightweight 6061 body is paired with a 304 stainless steel frame, enabling weight to be positioned at the extremities, increasing MOI. Vibration-dampening PU foam is embedded between the body and frame for consistent sound and feel.

The Spider Tour Red comes with a black Pure Roll Technology Surlyn-Black insert, which has a softer sound and feel compared to current World No 1 Dustin Johnson’s Spider Tour Black which has an 80/20 grey insert. Garcia’s putter is fitted with a blue and yellow SuperStroke 1.0P grip, while the stock grip is the Winn Medalist Pistol.

Garcia has struggled with his putting over the years and switched to the Spider Tour Red during the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in late March. He used the new putter to great effect on Augusta National’s slick greens, making only one three-putt over four days with an average of 1.65 putts per green in regulation.

In addition to the Red and Black, TaylorMade also released a Spider Tour Platinum with a Tour Chrome body, single sightline and milled gunmetal Pure Roll insert.
