Golf, fun and philanthropy came together in a heady mix at the second edition of The BAR°N Charity Golf Tournament, held on the afternoon of July 30 at Tropicana Golf & Country Club.
Organised by The BAR°N wine bar and restaurant, the event succeeded in raising RM30,000 for the National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) as the beneficiary for the second year running. Despite play being suspended midway due to a thunderstorm, the full field of 120 golfers managed to complete 18 holes under floodlights and enjoy a great outing on Tropicana’s superb golf course with its fast, undulating greens.
With the focus being on fun and charity, the event was played in Double Peoria format with 12 ‘secret’ holes used to determine each golfer’s handicap of the day. There were some novel touches such as two ‘Buy A Pro’ longest drive holes and the sale of ‘Mulligan’ vouchers, with all money collected going to the charitable pot.
“It was great fun organising our second annual charity golf tournament in aid of NASOM. Almost all of the corporations and individuals we approached responded positively. I guess this augurs well for Malaysians that, in spite of our busy schedules, we will still pause a moment to care for those in need,” said The BAR°N representative Ren Ee Chuan.
The corporate sponsors included Bermaz Motor who sponsored a Mazda2 SkyActiv as one of the hole-in-one prizes, BHPetrol, ECK Development, Swiss-Garden International, Huawei, Brown Brothers, Heineken, cuegolf.com, Dream Golf Events and Nippon Golf Tech.
NASOM chairman Feilina Muhammad Feisol voiced her appreciation for the financial support rendered by the charitable endeavour.
“NASOM is extremely pleased that The BAR°N has come to our aid for the second year running. As a charity, we rely on corporate sponsors as costs are high and when the economy is challenging, charities will always be the first to suffer. NASOM is always grateful for any financial aid we receive from endeavours such as this,” she said.
The guest of honour was YTM Tunku Temenggong Kedah, Dato’ Seri DiRaja Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz binti Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, who took time off from her busy schedule to play in the event and attend the prizegiving dinner at The BAR°N Mont Kiara.
The dinner was a high-spirited affair amplified by ‘live’ entertainment and an auction of various items to bolster the total collection. The highlight was a 2D/1N Bangkok golf package with a round for two at the super-exclusive Amata Spring Country Club, which was actually one of the hole-in-one prizes. Since there were no ace scorers, sponsor cuegolf.com donated the trip for the auction.
