India’s Anirban Lahiri will make his second Presidents Cup appearance in this year’s competition after being named by International Team captain Nick Price as one of his two picks.
Price chose Lahiri and Emiliano Grillo of Argentina, while his US counterpart Steve Stricker selected Charley Hoffman and Phil Mickelson as his captain’s picks. The 30-year-old Lahiri finished with a 0-3-0 record in his Presidents Cup debut in Korea two years ago. This year’s edition of the biennial team matchplay competition tees off at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City on September 28-October 1.
With these picks, the International Team has 22 previous Presidents Cup appearances amongst its members with four players making their debuts. Those numbers are 20 and six for the US Team, with the six rookies matching 1996 and 2011 for the most in team history. Mickelson will continue his reign as the only player to compete in all 12 Presidents Cups, dating back to the inaugural event in 1994.
“With Anirban at No. 16 in the standings, picking him may surprise some people, but my captain’s assistants and I felt like the team needed an additional player who has experienced Presidents Cup pressure before. We have three rookies who qualified, plus Emiliano making his debut. Anirban’s experience in South Korea two years ago will be invaluable for him, and the International Team, at Liberty National this year,” said Price.
