Asian Tour heads to Sarawak

Damai Golf & Country Club

The inaugural Sarawak Championship at Damai Golf & Country Club this July 4-7 will mark the first time that the Asian Tour is staging an event in the East Malaysian state. The US$300,000 tournament will see a total of 150 players, including a minimum of 25 Malaysians, contending for the title.

Supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Art, Culture, Youth and Sports Sarawak, the  tournament will be staged at the Arnold Palmer-designed course near the state capital of Kuching. The state had previously hosted events on the tour’s secondary circuit, the Asian Development Tour (ADT), from 2012 to 2017.

Asian Tour chief executive officer Josh Burack welcomed the addition of the new event to the tour’s 2018 schedule.

“This is excellent news for golf in Asia. Malaysia is a very important market for the Asian Tour and we are delighted to add the Sarawak Championship which we expect to be a terrific tournament. A big thank you to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Sarawak and all parties which worked together to bring this international tournament to the country” said Burack.

“Our Asian Tour players are excited to compete in Sarawak and be able to enjoy the vast culture which the state has to offer. Malaysia is a huge melting pot of culture and I’m confident the beauty of Sarawak will be extensively promoted through our television highlights show and the additional content we produce and distribute on our digital media channels,” he added.
