Thomas Pieters and Thomas Detry of Belgium combined superbly in the final day foursomes to win the ISPS HANDA Melbourne World Cup of Golf at The Metropolitan Golf Club by three strokes.
The Belgian duo carded a closing 68 in the alternate shot format to finish on 23-under-par, three strokes ahead of Mexico (Abraham Ancer / Roberto Diaz) and Australia (Marc Leishman / Cameron Smith). This was Belgium’s first win in the storied event since it was inaugurated in 1953.
Malaysia’s Gavin Green and Ben Leong rounded off their campaign with a 74 for 22nd place on six-under-par.
“A lot of positives to take from this week, especially playing for the first time in the World Cup. Wished we would have played a little bit better,” said Green. “Many mistakes but it was fun overall. It was fun to hang out with Ben and we have a good relationship.”
Leong added: “Well, we don’t have the best of weekends but it was a good week. Gavin’s playing in Australia again next week so I wish him well.”
