Veteran sports journalist and pundit Bob Holmes will be at Saujana Golf & Country Club the next two Saturdays for book-signing sessions of The Legend, the biography of late Malaysian professional V. Nellan which Holmes co-authored with PC Shivadas.
Holmes noted that all golfers should get the book as Nellan’s life made for a truly inspirational tale. “It’s a unique story of a Malaysian sportsman overcoming the odds to represent his country on the world stage. But anyone who knows Nellan knows it has to be much more than that – he was a great character and that comes out in the book.
“No matter how it’s written, Nellan’s personality and humour dominate – even in the darkest moments. And it will amaze many the people he met – past legends of the game to celebrities of other sports, prime ministers and kings! And it may inspire golfers to never give up,” said the Englishman, who has been domiciled in Malaysia for 25 years.
Holmes will be at Saujana’s golfer’s terrace from 11am to after lunch this coming Saturday (June 27) and the next (July 4). Those who buy the book (RM40) on-site will get a personalised autograph from Holmes, while prior purchasers can bring their copies along to be signed.
Nellan, who was attached to Saujana as resident pro and ambassador for almost 30 years, passed away on May 16 due to heart complications. Starting out as a caddie in his early teens at Royal Selangor Golf Club, he turned professional in 1969 and enjoyed a storied playing career, representing Malaysia in two World Cups of Golf.
Nellan was also a much sought-after coach, based at a number of clubs when his playing career wound down before joining Saujana. He had spent a lot of his time over the last few years travelling the country and beyond to teach the game he loved to beginners and juniors.
Holmes, who first met Nellan around two decades ago, reminisced that it was a fun and fulfilling experience working on the biography. “I knew Nellan first through the media and then as a pupil – he really did simplify the game which was why he was such a good teacher.
“He was great fun to work with on the book – his memory wasn’t perfect but in every conversation he produced a gem of a quote,” he shared.
Holmes has written numerous sports-related books over the years, including most recently an account of the key figures behind English football giants Liverpool, titled Shanks, Yanks, and Jurgen: The Men Behind Liverpool’s Rise, Slip, and Rise Again.
