The 13th AmBank Group – SportExcel International Junior Golf Championship will see a strong field of 148 players from eight countries take to the fairways of Glenmarie Golf & Country Club tomorrow.
The 54-hole tournament will feature 62 leading juniors from Malaysia and 86 international players from Thailand, India, China, Chinese Taipei, South Korea, Australia and Indonesia.
“AmBank Group believes in playing an important role in sports development, in this case junior golf. We believe that golf has bright potential and we have much confidence in SportExcel due to their long and proven track record,” said Syed Anuar Syed Ali, AmBank’s executive vice president, group corporate communications and marketing, at today’s opening ceremony.
“Our sponsorship through this tournament will assist in one way or the other, our local budding golfers in realising their dreams of one day making it as top professional golfers in not only Asia, but globally,” he added.
The players will compete in six categories – Boys A (15 – 18 years) old, Girls A (15 – 18), Boys B (13 – 14), Girls B (13 – 14), Boys C (10 – 12) and Girls C (10 – 12). The best player playing from the blue tees (Boys 13-14 and 15-18) and best player from the white tees (Girls 13-14 and 15-18) will both receive Tan Sri Azman Hashim challenge trophies. There is also a team category where the winners will be presented with the Tunku Imran challenge trophy.
Players to look out for include China’s Li Linqiang and Pan Jiehong, 2017 winner Jenny Ham of Thailand, as well as Malaysia’s Winnie Ng.
The juniors will also have the opportunity to win five golf scholarships from the renowned Hills Golf Academy in Australia. One player will be offered a one-year scholarship and four players will each be offered a one-month scholarship. A selection panel will select the recipients of the scholarships.
