Malaysia’s Arie Irawan carded a blemish-free six-under-par 66 in the opening round of the Maybank Championship at Saujana Golf & Country Club.
The 26-year-old nailed six birdies at Saujana’s Palm Course including five in a row from Holes 15 through 18 and Hole 1 (he started from the 10th tee) to lie in joint third place midway through the opening round, three shots behind early pacesetter Marc Warren of Scotland.
“I got off to a patient start, made the right decisions and then the birdies came,” said Arie. “Playing early in the morning helps a lot. The greens were really good and rolled well.”
“I love this golf course, I’ve played here since my junior and amateur days and it’s one of my favourites,” he added.
Following a superb 2015 season in which he won two Asian Development Tour titles, Arie suffered a dip in form and was also sidelined for four months after breaking his collarbone.
