Callaway Great Big Bertha Epic Drivers: Paradigm Shift

Callaway’s new Great Big Bertha Epic series drivers feature the innovative Jailbreak Technology, which fundamentally changes how the head and clubface behave at impact to deliver more ball speed and distance.

At impact, the clubface flexes and the crown bulges upward while the sole bulges downward. Jailbreak bars form a firm connection between the crown and sole to inhibit their flexing, putting more of the load of impact on the face. Termed ‘energy lensing’ by physicists, this promotes faster ball speed for more distance.

“GBB Epic series combine tour performance and forgiveness to make it a breakthrough in driver engineering,” said Dr Alan Hocknell, Callaway’s senior vice president of R&D. “Jailbreak Technology creates a new and remarkably efficient working relationship between the face, crown and sole to promote faster ball speed across more of the face to give the golfer more distance.”

Epic Sub Zero & Epic Star

The Epic Sub Zero and Epic Star clubheads are made using one-piece casting to minimise energy loss at impact and create highest ball speed within the conforming CT limit. Both heads have three-way carbon woven (Tri-Axial) material on the crown and sole to allow more free weights placement on the heads. Tri-Axial carbon is lighter than titanium and thinner than Forged Composite.

Designed for low spin, the Epic Sub Zero has front and back adjustable weights (12g and 2g) to create low or high spin control and an adjustable hosel. The Epic Star meanwhile is built for speed and has adjustable perimeter weighting for CG bias control and a non-adjustable hosel.

Both models feature Callaway’s Speed Step technology on the crown, which improves aerodynamics for more speed and distance, as well as a new improved Hyper Speed Forged Face Cup.

The standard shaft for both Epic drivers is the Speeder Evolution. The Sub Zero custom options are Tour AD TP-6, Speeder Evolution III 661 and Diamana BF 60, while the Star options are Tour AD TP-5, Speeder Evolution III 569 and Fubuki V.

Callaway will also introduce a complementary GBB Epic Driver, also featuring Jailbreak Technology, and a full line of GBB Epic Fairway Woods.
