Shah Alam, May 24: Chen Yi Tong of Taiwan will head into tomorrow’s final round of the MPI Generali Saujana Amateur Championship with a four-shot lead, carding a 67 in the second round to top the leaderboard on nine-under-par 135.
First round leader Atiruj Winaicharonechai of Thailand carded a 71 to lie in second place on 139.
The long-hitting Chen nailed five birdies and an eagle at Saujana Golf & Country Club’s Palm Course. He almost scored an ace at the par-three fifth hole with the ball hanging on the lip of the cup.
“My eagle came at the par-five 13th hole after a good drive with only 170 yards to the pin,” said the 17-year-old Chen. “I used an 8-iron for the approach which landed about 30 feet from the pin and I made the putt. But my most exciting hole was at the fifth where the ball stopped less than 1 centimetre from the hole!”
In third place on 141 is Australia’s Lachlan Barker, one shot ahead of defending champion Witchayanon Chothirunrungrueng of Thailand.
Ervin Chang is the leading Malaysian in joint 8th position on 146 with Sadom Kaewkanjana of Thailand and Joshua Ho of Singapore.
