Malaysia’s top two golfers Danny Chia and Nicholas Fung will team up for tomorrow’s fourball matches of the EurAsia Cup at Glenmarie Golf & Country Club.
Team Asia captain Jeev Milha Singh paired the two Malaysians together for the third match of the six fourballs, where they will face French star Victor Dubuisson and Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen.
“I just felt to build the momentum, I need some strong players out there and I think these two players, playing on this golf course and having the knowledge, would be a perfect combination,” said Singh.
“That’s why I put them in the middle. If the momentum is good in the front, I think the back half also picks up. They have home course knowledge, the crowds are going to come out to cheer them on, support them, and I think that makes a lot of difference when you’re playing in your home country.,” he added.
The 43-year-old Chia will be making his first appearance in the matchplay team event against Europe, having qualified for the Asian team on merit by finishing eighth on the 2015 Asian Tour Order of Merit. Fung got in as one of Singh’s captain’s picks and also played in the inaugural event in 2014.
“I feel honoured to be representing Team Asia. I’ll be the rookie for this format and I’ve got Nicholas on my back, so that eases me off a little bit. I’m looking forward to tomorrow,” said Chia, who has won twice at Glenmarie.
Fung was also looking forward to teaming up with Chia. “It’s good for us to partner together because we know each other’s games, we know each other’s mistakes. So as I say, he’s my mentor, so whenever I have low confidence, he is always there to guide me how to play,” said the 25-year-old, who has been in great form in recent months.
