Malaysia’s most celebrated professional golfer Danny Chia staged his inaugural charity event at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort on June 28, in aid of flood rehabilitation efforts in the East Coast of Peninsula Malaysia.
Despite short notice, Danny’s Charity Golf 2015 succeeded in raising RM35,000 from the participation fees, dinner-only attendees as well an auction of memorabilia from Chia’s storied golf career. The money will be channelled via MERCY Malaysia to help rebuild homes and infrastructure in Kuala Krai, Kelantan – one of the worst-hit areas during the devastating East Coast floods in December 2014.
“I had the opportunity to see the devastation in Kuala Krai myself as an ambassador of the Malaysian Open and what I saw immediately brought tears to my eyes. Whilst numerous corporate companies and noble individuals have stepped forward to assist the affected families, many are still struggling in the rebuilding process of their houses and public infrastructure,” said Chia, who made history in the 2010 British Open at St Andrews when he became the first Malaysian to make the cut in a Major.
“That is why I decided to run the charity golf event with the intention of raising money to assist the people of Kuala Krai to rebuild their town. I thank all the participants and donors for their generous contributions, which will be forwarded to MERCY Malaysia to aid the rebuilding efforts,” he added.
Sponsors of Danny’s Charity Golf 2015 included Titleist, Absolute Thai, Brother, Carlsberg, Crest Link, Maxtrack, Pen-Drive, Singleton, Tamico-Bell, Transview, Titoni and True Golf.
