Bryson DeChambeau says that he wants to be the ‘Albert Einstein of golf’ by taking the science of the game to hitherto unexplored levels.
The enigmatic American made the comments following his dominating victory in the European Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic with a tournament record 24-under-par total at Emirates Golf Club. This was DeChambeau’s sixth professional victory and his first outside the United States.
“Einstein has always intrigued me with not being successful in school and then being incredibly successful after college – and that’s kind of the same thing for me.
“Even though I loved SMU (Southern Methodist University) and I learned an incredible amount of knowledge, sometimes school doesn’t really prepare you for the real world and what you’re going to do; and golf is unique too. It really is a sport that hasn’t been figured out. I wanted to kind of do that. I wanted it to be one of my goals in life,” said the 25-year-old, who shot a stunning eight-under-par 64 in the final round to finish seven strokes ahead of England’s Matt Wallace.
DeChambeau’s revolutionary approach to the game spans not only his swing and equipment, where he uses a single plane swing to hit his single length Cobra irons and wedges, but also his on-course methodology for wind-estimation and green-reading.
“For Einstein, general relativity, he wanted to figure that out and he did. It’s pretty amazing what he’s done for the world and his work stands the test of time – and I want something in the game of golf that will do the same,” noted the five-time PGA Tour winner.
Currently ranked fifth in the Official World Golf Ranking, DeChambeau has now won four times in his last nine starts but says he is still playing below potential.
“The technology isn’t there to figure out some of the stuff that I want to figure out – it’s going to take probably about five years before we can get close to around 80 to 90 per cent,” he stressed.
