The Els Club Desaru Coast recently opened its 27-hole Ocean Course for public play. Designed by four-time Major winner Ernie Els, the Ocean layout is split into three distinct nine-hole loops – the Lakes, Coast and Ridge.
The first two nines are traditional par-36 affairs while the Ridge plays to par-37 with a 4×4, 2×3 and 3×5 make-up.Those who are familiar with the original Desaru course, built in the 1980s, will recognise some parts on which the Coast Nine was built – in particular Holes 2 and 3 which take you within a pitch and putt of the waters of the South China Sea.
“I love the way you can mix it up. I’m always drawn to the ocean and enjoy nothing better than a view out over the water and the challenge of playing different shots in the wind. Saying that, The Lakes and The Ridge also represent a good test and you really have to think about your positional play, your shot selection and your distance control going into the greens,” said Els.
Slated to open in early 2017 is the Desaru Valley Course, co-designed by Vijay Singh. The courses are served by separate clubhouses, both with easy access to the Els Golf Performance Academy.
The golf element is only part of the ambitious Desaru Coast project, covering over 3,900 acres along a 17-km beachfront. Once complete, the destination will boast a water theme park, retail village, convention centre and four upper-tier hotels – Aman Resorts & Villas, The Westin Desaru Resort, Anantara Desaru Resort and Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast.
Owners Themed Attractions Resorts & Hotels (TAR&H) – the resort and theme park development arm of the Malaysian treasury – aim to make Desaru Coast one of the region’s flagship golf and tourism destinations.
“We have made considerable strides in bringing the very best partners to Johor, and have set in motion a tourism legacy that will deliver jobs and a world class experience for all who visit. Today we have opened The Els Club Desaru Coast – The Ocean, which will fly the flag for the development and pave the way for a succession of top-class amenity introductions,” said Muhammad Zainal Ashikin, CEO – Destinations Resorts & Hotel Portfolio, of TAR&H.
“The Els Club brand resonates with excellence and quality. We are committed to embedding a new standard for hospitality, service and quality that will set Desaru on course to become one of the top tourism and golf destinations regionally and internationally,” he added.
