Flamboyant young American Rickie Fowler and US Ryder Cup players Nick Watney and Jason Dufner have committed to play in the US$6.1 million CIMB Classic at The Mines.
The trio will join Tiger Woods, Ben Crane and Bo Van Pelt in the joint PGA Tour and Asian Tour event, which tees off on 25-28 October at The Mines. Chasing the winner’s purse of US$1.3 million will be a 48-player field made up of 30 from the PGA Tour, 10 from the Asian Tour and eight sponsor’s exemptions – including Malaysian No. 1 Danny Chia who won the Sapura National Qualifier earlier this month.
The 23-year-old Fowler will be making his second appearance in the CIMB Classic having played in the inaugural event in 2010, finishing joint fifth. He won his first professional title in the 2011 Kolon Korea Open and earlier this year beat Rory McIlroy and D.A. Points in a playoff at to claim his first PGA Tour title in the Wells Fargo Open.
“One of the best parts of being a professional golfer is the opportunity to travel and experience different cultures and amazing parts of the world, and Malaysia is no exception. I love Malaysia and am really looking forward to playing in the CIMB Classic next month. I played well there in 2010 and enjoyed everything the course and the entire country had to offer. I can’t wait to go back,” said the colourfully-clad golfer.
Dufner has enjoyed one of the most consistent and successful seasons on the PGA Tour this year, winning twice at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the HP Byron Nelson Classic.
“I am very excited to be returning to the CIMB Classic,” said Dufner who finished 10th at The Mines in last year’s event. “I performed well at the event last year and had a great experience visiting the country and the city of Kuala Lumpur for the first time. As a player who enjoys playing around the globe, I look forward to the opportunity to play in front of such enthusiastic golf fans. The PGA Tour is continuing to lift its profile in the Asia-Pacific region, and I hope I’ll have the chance to come back for years to come.”\
Making his first appearance in Malaysia, Watney won the first FedExCup Playoffs event at The Barclays at Bethpage State Park for his fifth career PGA Tour victory. He finished the 2011 FedExCup ranked No. 9 after starting the Playoffs ranked No. 1.
“This will be my first visit to Kuala Lumpur and I’m really looking ahead to the CIMB Classic. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the event and the area from players who went over last year,” Watney said. “It’s a great opportunity for me personally to learn about a new culture and for the PGA Tour to help widen interest in the game and our tour in a part of the world that has shown it embraces the sport.”
