Malaysia’s Gavin Green fired a superb six-under-par 66 to lie joint second after the first round of the CJ Cup @ Nine Bridges in Jeju, Korea, three shots behind leader Justin Thomas.
Starting on the 10th tee at Nine Bridges Golf Club, Green made five birdies going out and two more coming in against one bogey. The long-hitting 23-year-old switched to a new putter this week after a disappointing outing in the CIMB Classic on home soil.
“Last week was frustrating. This week I just went out there and tried to stick to my game plan and then it was solid. Made some really good approach shots and then made some putts. Next thing you know you’re a couple under. Unfortunately I missed a couple of shots or two. Give and take … it was a solid run overall,” said Green.
Asked about the new putter, Green replied: “It behaved today, thankfully! It definitely behaved. So far it’s working.”
The US$9.25 million CJ Cup @ Nine Bridges is the first official PGA Tour event in Korea and forms the second stop of a three-event swing in Asia, sandwiched between the CIMB Classic in Malaysia and the WGC-HSBC Champions in China.
