Australian Nathan Holman upstaged the big names to lead the first round of the Maybank Championship Malaysia with a superb seven-under-par 64 at Royal Selangor Golf Club.
The 24-year-old from Melbourne carded seven birdies in a flawless round to take a one-shot lead over six players – namely England’s Danny Willett and Tommy Fleetwood, Filipino stalwart Angelo Que, American Peter Uihlein, France’s Alexander Levy and Spaniard Jorge Campillo.
“I just played really well. Every part of my game was quite good. I was saying a few weeks ago that my game has been trending in that right direction so it was nice to get a really good one in,” said Holman.
“There’re a lot of chances but you get in the rough and it can really grab you, so I’m really happy with seven-under,” he added.
Tournament drawcards Louis Oosthuizen and Martin Kaymer had contrasting starts, with the former shooting 67 and the latter an even-par 71.
Shaaban Hussin had a roller-coaster round of four-under-par 67 to lead the Malaysian challenge, followed by Kenneth De Silva who signed in a card for 68. Rookie professional Low Khai Jei enjoyed a solid start with a round of 69.
