Kelab Golf Negara Subang (KGNS) will mark its 50th anniversary this year with a host of events and activities extending beyond golf.
The club was officially opened on September 1, 1968, by the country’s first Prime Minister, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, who was also the major force behind its formation.
KGNS president Tengku Dato’ Shamsul Bahrin outlined the events during the official launch of the 50th anniversary logo on October 16. Themed ‘A Heritage From Yesterday, A Treasure For Tomorrow’, the celebrations reflect the club’s storied history as well as its vision moving forward as one of the most prestigious members’ clubs in the country.
Among the events lined up are friendly golf games with associated clubs in Malaysia and the region, along with other sports such as squash, tennis and swimming. KGNS will also give back to society by hosting orphans from selected homes to a day of fun and food on October 21.
The highlight of the celebrations comes on the weekend of October 27-28 with a members’ tournament on Saturday followed by an invitation-only VIP game on Sunday, culminating in a Gala Dinner.
KGNS’ rich legacy dates back to 1963 when Tunku Abdul Rahman decided to initiate the building of a new golf course in Petaling Jaya to mark the formation of Malaysia. The championship Putra Course crafted by Japanese architect S.I. Inouye opened for play in 1968 and is a par-72 parkland layout which hosted the Malaysian Open in 1983, 1987 and 1991. The course recently underwent an extensive renovation focusing on the greens and approach areas.
Built in 1986, the par-70 Kelana Course is a more modern and friendlier layout designed by the American firm of Bradford, Benz and Poellot.
