Laksamana Trophy raises more than RM3.8 million

The Sultan of Johor, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim Ismail Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj, graced the inaugural Laksamana Trophy Charity Golf Tournament on November 26. Themed ‘When Golf Matters’, the tournament was organised by the Johor Golf Tourism Association (JGTA) at The Els Club Desaru Coast.

More than RM3.8 million was raised from the event in support of the Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Foundation. A full field of 120 golfers comprising industry captains. corporate heads and senior government officials teed-off on the highly-rated Ocean Course, designed by four-time Major winner Ernie Els and opened for play in September this year.

The funds raised came from corporate sponsorships, led by principal sponsor the Weststar Group, as well as entry fees, pledges and an auction during the prizegiving lunch emceed by popular comedian Harith Iskander. The highlight of the auction was a Harley Davidson motorcycle which saw the hammer go down at a whopping RM2.1 million.

“We hope the Laksamana Trophy will grow and and generate more funds for the Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Foundation,” added Tan Sri Esa, who also revealed that His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim has decreed that the tournament will be annual event at The Els Club Desaru Coast.

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim also took the time to officially launch the Ocean Course, a 27-hole layout consisting of the Lakes, Coast and Ridge nines. The Laksamana Trophy was played on the Lakes and Coast.

“We are honoured His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim blessed us with his presence and launched our 27-hole championship golf course signalling an exciting new era for the region’s tourism sector,” said Muhammad Zainal Ashikin, executive director and CEO of DDC. “We are inspired by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim’s vision to welcome visitors from all over the world that will spur positive regional impact for Johor. The Els Club Desaru Coast – Ocean Course is one of the many experiences we are offering in Desaru Coast, which will also include resorts and hotels, a water park and retail outlets.”
