Lucrative CIMB Classic spot awaits winner of SapuraKencana National Qualifier

A coveted spot in the US$7 million CIMB Classic awaits the winner of the SapuraKencana National Qualifier, which tees off August 26-28 at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC).
The tournament is sanctioned by the Professional Golf Association of Malaysia (PGAM) and offers a total prize purse of RM150,000 with the winner taking home RM22,000, plus a spot at the CIMB Classic 2013.

The CIMB Classic 2013, which is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour, is the first PGA Tour-sanctioned event in the region. In its fourth year running, the tournament will debut as an Official Event on the PGA Tour’s revamped 2013-2014 schedule and will be part of the season-long FedExCup competition.

The field will also be expanded to include a minimum of 78 players – 60 coming from the PGA Tour, 10 from Asian Tour and eight sponsor¹s exemption, and will carry a total purse of US$7 million.

PGAM president Mohd Firuz Jaffril said: “As in previous years, out of the eight sponsor’s exemptions, CIMB Classic accords two spots for Malaysians. If the winner of the SapuraKencana National Qualifier is also the leading Malaysian in the Official World Golf Ranking (OGWR), which will be determined by 6 October 2013, the second spot for the CIMB Classic will automatically go to the next best-ranked Malaysian on the OGWR.”

“SapuraKencana’s sponsorship of the National Qualifier is aimed at further stirring the growing passion for golf in Malaysia. For aspiring home-grown golfing talent, this is a unique tournament and rare opportunity for them to battle for a place in the CIMB Classic, a marquee event in the PGA Tour and Asian Tour calendars,” said SapuraKencana’s president and group CEO, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Shahril Shamsuddin.
