Lucrative start in CIMB Classic awaits winner of Sapura National Qualifier

A coveted place in the US$6.1 million CIMB Classic awaits the winner of the Sapura National Qualifier which will take place at The Mines Resort next week.

More than 100 local professionals are expected to tee-off in the three-day qualifier on September 10-12, which offers a total purse of RM150,000 with RM22,000 going to the winner. Among the favourites are Shaaban Hussin, who had won the qualifier for the last two years to earn successive starts in the CIMB Classic, Malaysia’s No. 1 golfer Danny Chia and the in-form Airil Rizman.

Speaking during a press conference at The Mines this morning, Sapura’s president and group CEO, Dato’ Seri Shahril Shamsuddin, said: “The Sapura National Qualifier offers a bigger stake for players as they will compete for the chance of a lifetime to play alongside Tiger Woods at the CIMB Classic 2012, as well as past tournament winners Bo Van Pelt and Ben Crane. More importantly, the Sapura National Qualifier champion will also be given the opportunity to benchmark himself against an international field, which we believe is critical to the development of the sport here.”

The CIMB Classic is the only PGA Tour-sanctioned tournament in the region and will be staged at The Mines this October 25-28 with a 48-player field, comprising 30 from the PGA Tour, 10 from the Asian Tour and eight sponsor’s exemptions.

From 2013 onwards, the CIMB Classic will become an Official Money Event on the PGA Tour and be part of the season-long FedExCup competition. The field will be expanded to 78 and the total purse upped to US$7 million.
