Malaysia’s Natasha Andrea Oon began her collegiate golf career with a bang, anchoring the San José State women’s team started to victory and claiming the individual title in the Minnesota Invitational at Prestwick Golf Club in Woodbury yesterday.
Natasha carded rounds of 67, 70 and 70 to finish with an impressive nine-under-par 207 total, six shots ahead of runner-up Emily Mahar of Virginia Tech. The Malaysian led the field in birdies made with 13 and ended her campaign in style with an an eagle at the par-five, 500-yard 18th hole.
The San José State team, known as the Spartans, finished the tournament at four-under 860 to claim the team title by 12 shots over Virginia Tech.
“I am very happy to shoot my personal best and win my first collegiate tournament. It is also so nice that we won the team title too,” said Natasha, who turned 17 two days ago.
“On my eagle, I hit a really good drive with help from the wind. I had about 196 yards to the hole and hit a hybrid to the right of the pin. The ball hit the edge of the bunker and rolled near the pin. I then made a seven-foot putt for the eagle.”
San Jose’s head coach Dana Dornam lauded her team’s effort. “We are very excited for this win. We made lots of birdies and are excited to continue this throughout the season. Natasha was amazing this tournament, and the rest of the team elevated their games as well,” she said.
