The ParGolf Awards 2013 Gala Night, staged on April 25 at The Saujana Hotel in the presence of over 220 guests, was a double celebration that toasted the country’s and region’s top achievers in addition to commemorating ParGolf’s 15 years as a magazine.
Once again, the region’s only industry-wide golf awards this year welcomed the support of Tourism Malaysia and the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA). The latest edition also featured new award categories including Comeback Golfer of the Year, Outstanding Performance of the Year and Outstanding Contribution to Golf – Golf Clubs. The glitzy dinner saw an attendee list consisting of a ‘who’s who’ in Malaysian golf and related industries, including guest of honour, MGA president Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor.
“This is our fourth edition of the ParGolf Awards, and we are here to celebrate the achievements of professional golfers, amateurs, juniors, golf clubs, golf equipment companies, as well as individuals and companies that have been passionately involved in golf. I cannot emphasise more that every single nominee here is a winner, so you can all be proud of yourselves. Keep up the good job!” said Suzannah Gun Palmer, publisher of ParGolf.
“We would like to thank Tourism Malaysia and MGA for their support – this partnership certainly ensures a credible and memorable award ceremony as we honour achievements within the golf fraternity. Many of you here have supported us from the beginning, and it makes me proud and extremely humbled to stand here today and express my gratitude for your belief in ParGolf magazine.
“This year also marks ParGolf Magazine’s 15th year in existence. We have grown by leaps and bounds, and this year we have introduced ParGolf EFX, which stands for Enhanced Feature Experience – this is a really cool and fun app which allows you to bring still images to life. If you haven’t downloaded the ParGolf EFX app, you have got to download it and experience this cool tool for yourself!” she added.
As in the previous three editions, the voted awards were based on a points system made up of three elements – voting by a 90-strong panel of golf industry personalities appointed by ParGolf, an online poll on www.pargolfmagazine.com and ParGolf’s management’s selection. There were a total of 20 award categories broken down into nine ‘voted’ awards and 11 ‘special’ awards.
The highlight of the night was the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented posthumously to the former deputy prime minister of Malaysia, the late Tun Ghafar Baba. The award recognises individuals who have played pivotal roles in the development of golf in Malaysia.
Tun Ghafar was a former president of the Malaysian PGA and was the driving force behind the creation of two of Malaysia’s leading golf clubs, Ayer Keroh Country Club and Kelab Rahman Putra Malaysia. He designed both courses, making him perhaps the only minister in the world to have designed not one but two golf courses.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club swept their fourth consecutive award for Golf Club of The Year – Malaysia, while Kota Permai Golf & Country Club bagged their third Best Maintained Golf Course of the Year award. Award winners who topped their categories for two years running were Inbee Park for Asian Amateur Golfer of the Year – Female, Nicholas Fung for Malaysian Professional Golfer of the Year and Gavin Kyle Green for Malaysian Amateur Golfer of the Year – Male.
The gala night was supported by event partners Carlsberg and Sunrise Wines, who supplied guests with free flowing Carlsberg beer and Glengrant whisky. Lucky draw prizes were sponsored by Liberty Golf Services (3D2N golf holiday package for two to Bandung, Indonesia), ATG Watch (Titoni timepiece), Sharp (39” TV) and Glengrant whisky.
