The Genting Challenge Junior Golf Matchplay which tees off tomorrow at Awana Genting Highlands Golf & Country Resort will see a team from Peninsular Malaysia take on their Borneo counterparts over two days of Ryder Cup-style competition.
The inaugural event is sponsored by Genting Malaysia Berhad and will see the two teams battle it out in fourball, foursomes and singles matches over the course of the two days. Both the Peninsular and Borneo teams are represented by eight boys and eight girls respectively, aged below 19 as of 2nd April 2019.
According to SportExcel executive director C. Sivanandan, the tournament will foster goodwill amongst players, parents and team officials while testing the skills of the golfers. “Genting Malaysia’s support and sponsorship of the event is a great boost for junior golf in Malaysia,” he said.
During a mock cheque presentation for the sponsorship amount last week, Genting Malaysia’s vice president for corporate relations and communications Dato’ Sri Kay Prakash voiced her enthusiasm for the event. “Golf is a great sport. We are happy to do our part in promoting junior golf as well as fostering goodwill among the juniors from Borneo and Peninsular,” she said.
In addition to the Genting Challenge, the 2019 SportExcel National Junior Circuit will see a total of 15 tournaments staged including two international events.
