The PGA Tour field for the third edition of the CIMB Classic has been finalised and includes 11 winners from the 2012 season, who will tee-off at The Mines Resort & Golf Club this October 25-28.
The 36 committed players from the PGA Tour, including six sponsors’ exemptions, will join the top 10 available players from the Asian Tour Order of Merit (after this week’s CJ Invitational) as well as Malaysians Danny Chia and Shaaban Hussin in the US$6.1 million event.Headlining the field is Tiger Woods, winner of 14 Majors and a two-time FedExCup champion.
Former World No. 1 Woods, who won three times on the 2012 PGA Tour – at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard, the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance and the AT&T National – will be playing in the CIMB Classic for the first time in his career and is returning to The Mines and Malaysia for the first time since winning the 1999 World Cup of Golf with Mark O’Meara.
Other winners from the 2012 PGA Tour season who are in the field include Nick Watney (The Barclays), Jason Dufner (Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the HP Byron Nelson Championship), Carl Pettersson (RBC Heritage), Scott Piercy (RBC Canadian Open), Rickie Fowler (Wells Fargo Championship), John Huh (Mayakoba Golf Classic), Kyle Stanley (Waste Management Phoenix Open), Bill Haas (Northern Trust Open), Johnson Wagner (Sony Open in Hawaii) and Marc Leishman (Travelers Championship).
2011 champion Bo Van Pelt returns to The Mines to defend his title after a successful season in which he finished 22nd in the final FedExCup standings.
In addition to the players who gained entry via the FedExCup, Martin Laird, 2010 champion Ben Crane, Sean O’Hair, Ricky Barnes, Cameron Tringale and 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman received sponsors’ exemptions into this year’s field.
Sanctioned by the PGA Tour, Asian Tour and Professional Golf Association of Malaysia, the CIMB Classic 2012 will see a field of 48 players competing for a US$6.1 million prize purse, with US$1.3 million going to the winner. The no-cut tournament will feature 30 players from the PGA Tour and the top 10 available players from the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit after this week’s CJ Invitational.
