Chonburi, Thailand, December 5: Nine star players of the second edition of the Thailand Golf Championship helped raise over THB7 million for the Sai Jai Thai Foundation Under the Royalty Patronage during last night’s gala dinner.

Defending champion Lee Westwood, Major champions Charl Schwartzel, Bubba Watson, John Daly and Darren Clarke as well as Ryder Cup hero Sergio Garcia, Japanese star Ryo Ishikawa and local favourite Thongchai Jaidee attended the glitzy event at The St. Regis Bangkok.

The highlight of the evening at was the charity auction of autographed drivers and other items donated by the star players. The organisers of the Thailand Golf Championship agreed to match the amount raised through the auction, which was THB3.59 million making the total charitable collection an impressive THB7.18 million ((US$234,000). The foundation assists families of Thai military personnel who have sacrificed their lives or been injured while protecting the nation’s security.

Schwartzel was delighted to play a part in the proceedings as his autographed driver went for THB520,000.

“It’s very important to give back and I think from our side as golfers, whenever we can help in any way in those sorts of things, we do.  So it’s easy enough to sign a golf club and get some money for it, but it’s even better when it goes to something that can help other people,” he said.

The Thailand Golf Championship tees-off tomorrow at Amata Spring Country Club.
