Swedish star Henrik Stenson will be one of the headliners for the 2018 Maybank Championship, scheduled for February 1-4 at Saujana Golf & Country Club.
Currently ranked ninth in the world, Stenson has won 20 professional titles worldwide including the 2016 British Open at Royal Troon when he in a gripping final day battle against Phil Mickelson to become the first Swede to win a men’s Major. Stenson also claimed a silver medal for his country in that year’s Olympics Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Stenson also holds the distinction of being the only golfer to have won both the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup and European Tour’s Race to Dubai in the same year, a feat he achieved in 2013.
The US$3 million Maybank Championship 2018 is co-sanctioned by the European Tour and Asian Tour, a long-standing partnership which will see the best players from both tours compete in the tournament.
“We are delighted to welcome Henrik Stenson to Maybank Championship 2018, ASEAN’s leading home-grown international golfing experience. As one of the most respected and anticipated co-sanctioned tournaments in the ASEAN region, the Maybank Championship will be a valuable platform for this established champion to make his mark,” said Datuk Abdul Farid Alias, Group President and CEO of Maybank.
The third edition of the Maybank Championship will once again further its efforts at expanding the appeal of golf to a wider pool of fans by enhancing the sensory experience of visitors to the event.
