Jersey City, October 1: Team USA captain Steve Stricker paid tribute to his players after their emphatic 19-11 victory over the International team in the 2017 Presidents Cup at Liberty National.
“These guys played so well. They played well all year long and they came here with a lot of confidence. They continued it right through this tournament here,” he said.
“I’m so proud of them all. They just kept grinding it out and kept fighting, and they never lost the focus,” added Stricker.
Stricker noted that the current team, spearheaded by the likes of Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson, share a special connection .
“I’ve played on some close-knit teams but this might be the closest of them all. These guys spend a lot of time with each other down in Florida. They play a lot out on tour and then they go back home and they have fun,” said Stricker, who compiled a 14-10-0 record as a player in five winning Presidents Cup appearances from 1996 to 2013.
“They are just great players. I mean, I marvel at some of the shots that they are capable of hitting, and the way they conduct themselves on the golf course. The way they are so aggressive; they just take it on. They are good kids and they are fun to be around. I was just trying to get out of their way! They were playing so well,” he went on.
The American win extended their success in the matchplay team event to 10 wins in 12 meetings. The Internationals won once at Royal Melbourne in 1998 with the 2003 match at Fancourt in South Africa ending in a tie. The next Presidents Cup returns to Royal Melbourne in December 2019.
