Pattaya, July 9: Thai teenager Atthaya Thitikul became the youngest winner of a professional event when she claimed a two-shot victory in the Ladies European Thailand Championship at the age of 14 years, 4 months and 19 days.
Atthaya carded rounds of 70, 71, 70 and 72 for a five-under-par 283 total at the Phoenix Golf Golf & Country Club in Pattaya. However, as an amateur she was not eligible for prizemoney and the first place cheque of 45,000 euros went to runner-up Ana Menendez of Mexico.
“I’m so happy and proud of myself. I did not look nervous but of course I felt nerves on the first tee and on the first hole. I did not think about the score. I committed to every shot I hit and stayed relaxed. My caddie helped me a lot … not to think too much, to focus on my game plan and to plan the tee shots and second shots,” said Atthaya, known as Jeen to her friends.
Atthaya received an invitation to play in the inaugural Ladies European Tour event from tournament sponsor, the Sports Authority of Thailand. She will lead the Thai ladies challenge in the KL SEA Games this August, to be played at the Mines Resort & Golf Club.
