With just a week to go before the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games golf competition at The Mines Resort & Golf Club, the golf course is shaping up well and will provide a fitting battleground for the top amateurs of the region.
“Overall the golf course is in good shape. We pay attention to detail in all areas and, of course, the greens are a priority,” said The Mines’ senior general manager Sharudin Kamarudin.
“The course has improved tremendously over the past three months, thanks to a great job by our course superintendent KK Ng who was responsible for CIMB Classic from 2010 to 2012. I would say we are ready for the event.”
Sharudin noted that the greens will be rolling fast during the tournament. “Green speed will be at an average of 10.5 to 11 feet on the Stimpmeter. The rough cutting height will be at 52mm for the event,” he said.
Over the last few months, Team Malaysia has been practising regularly at The Mines while the other teams have made trips to Kuala Lumpur to play the course.
“The Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines and Laos teams have come to play. We wish the Malaysian team all the best and I would say our players stand an equal chance of winning gold,” noted Sharudin.
The SEA Games golf event takes place on August 22-26 with four gold medals at stake. The men’s and women’s individual events will each be played as three-round strokeplay competitions, followed by the men’s and women’s team events which are in knockout matchplay format. The teams will be seeded based on players’ performances in the individual event.
The Malaysian women’s squad is made up of Loy Hee Ying, Nur Durriyah Damian and Ashley Lau, while the men’s team consists of Galven Kendall Green, Danial Durisic, Chan Tuck Soon and Ervin Chang.
Spectators enjoy free entrance with public access via Gate C (see diagram below).
“Spectators can park their cars either at The Mines International Exhibition & Convention Centre or The Mines Shopping Mall and walk to the entrance at Gate C,” said Sharudin.
