So you’re a self-proclaimed golf worshipper, a one-sport man/woman … BUT you are also secretly in love with other sports. Now, now, stop beating yourself up over it – it’s not cheating, it’s called being ‘well-rounded’.
And one fine sport that has become increasingly popular in the country is mountain biking, perfect for thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies. Apart from benefits such as improved heart health, reduced stress and improved mood, being active in the sport also improves one’s balance and coordination skills.
So go ahead, round up your gang of ‘daredevils’ and have at it!
TOP 5 MOUNTAIN BIKING TRAILS IN THE KLANG VALLEY
Taman Bukit Kiara
Numero uno on our list, and for good reason. Situated in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Bukit Kiara offers many trails (choose between 5km and 20km trails) from soft switchbacks and medium gradient slopes to the more extreme, technically-challenging bends and jumps (not for the faint of heart!). Look out for mischievous monkeys and pretty kingfishers. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a hornbill or cobra. (Hey, they say cobras bring good fortune. Okay, maybe not.) Note: Watch out for hikers.
Located in the vicinity of Setia Alam, Bukit Ramlee offers a number of trails, some up to 40km. Enjoy riding through an oil palm track and quaint villages. Once you reach the top of the hill, take a well-deserved breather at Bukit Ramlee Café; here you can enjoy fresh pineapple juice (grown by property and café owner Encik Ramlee) and savour local dishes. Watch out for the ‘Dragonback’, a seesawing trunk road that tests the stamina of even the most seasoned bikers. (You have been warned!)
Kota Damansara Community Forest
Located about 10 minutes from Taman Bukit Kiara, Kota Damansara Community Forest has a few trails that weave in and out of a verdant primary forest reserve. There are also relatively easy tracks, with some ‘wicked’ spots thrown into the mix to test your agility and skills. All in all, this is a fun, fast trail through lush greenery. Note: Watch out for hikers.
Putrajaya Challenge Park
Situated in Dengkil (near Kuala Lumpur International Airport), Putrajaya Challenge Park is a 30-hectare park in Putrajaya’s Precinct 5 offering a 9.1km trail, tracking along ridges, up switchbacks and down steep hills through a former rubber and oil palm forest. Trails range from easy to difficult, and include core trail loops, downhill fun rides and table-top jumps. There’s also a ‘pump track’ here.
Forest Research Institute Of Malaysia (FRIM)
Located 16km from the heart of Kuala Lumpur, FRIM offers a few trails along the hilly terrain of the FRIM campus. Get ready to take on a winding trail which meanders through the forest, bridges and little streams – a recipe for a fun ride. Safe for all levels of bikers – young and old – as it’s a family-friendly trail. Note: There’s an entrance fee; bike rental is also available here.
