Tired of winding up at the same old watering hole week in, week out? Oh you know what we’re talking about … that one all-too-familiar bar where “everybody knows your name”? Time to shake things up a little! Relight that penchant for “adventure” in you and check out these cool-as-heck speakeasies in the Klang Valley. Trust us – you’ll be dying to impress your drinking buddies with these, maybe even that hot stuff you’ve been eyeing forever! (If you don’t already know, ‘speakeasy’ is the term that was used to describe unlicensed establishments during the 1930s Prohibition when alcoholic beverages were illegal throughout the United States; they were so called because of the practice of speaking in hushed tones about such places in public so as not to alert the authorities.)

The Attic

The Attic Bar is hidden on the rooftop of one of Chinatown’s hippest hostels, attracting a diverse crowd of travellers and locals. The way up to the Attic is an adventure, going through old wooden stairs and rooms with an old Chinatown motif and climbing up an old school spiral staircase which whizzes you up to The Attic Bar. Cocktails here are bold and experimental, with the classics retained on the menu. They’re also big on theme-based drinks, such as Game of Thrones-inspired cocktails.

Locker & Loft

Located in Damansara Kim, The Locker & Loft is a slightly-hidden restaurant with a distillery-feel with stunning 25-foot copper bar. The emphasis is on incorporating fresh local herbs, spices and fruits into the drinks, such as a twist of the kat chai shin mui (with gin and Midori), fresh jackfruit milkshakes and mangosteen liqueur. It offers fusion food too including grilled watermelon salad, mutton varuval quesadilla, char siew pork ribs, and kesum leaf pasta. Music is non-commercial with funk, soul, jazz and house tunes.

Hyde at 53m, a space that is reminiscent of the early 20s with a tasteful infusion of 21st-century cool, is aptly “hidden” in Damansara Utama. The décor is rich with leather Chesterfield sofas and antique lightings, with an elegant marble bar top facing a vibrant bar shelf filled with all the libations you can dream of. Specialities include exquisitely-crafted cocktails, a mixture of well-made classics and inventive new mixes as well as a good selection of spirits, wines and craft beers – all enhanced with great service.

Housed in a pre-war shop on Petaling Street, PS150 snakes around a tiny stationery shop and under the popular coffee shop, Merchant’s Lane, to inhibit the least expected of places. Child-like curiosity is rewarded at PS150 as more than meets the eye with the bar’s unassuming entrance. Befitting its location, Far Eastern accents liven up the bar as the interiors harken back to a darker, yet more exciting time in our city’s history. Cocktails here boast bold Southeast Asian flavours fused with an array of spirits and liqueurs.
