Singapore, March 2: Michelle Wie carded a superb six-under-par 66 to top the leaderboard after round one of the HSBC Women’s Champions at Sentosa Golf Club.
The American turned in one of her strongest recent performances on the New Tanjong Course to lead by one shot over Anna Nordqvist, Mo Martin, Inbee Park, Brooke Henderson and Ariya Jutanugarn. With the new course clearly suiting her eye, Wie shot three birdies and one bogey on the front nine, followed by five birdies and a single bogey after the turn.
“You know, it’s a marathon this week, it’s not a sprint, but I have to say I’m very proud of where I’ve positioned myself today, and hopefully the next three days I can keep it going, keep it rolling and keep having fun,” said Wie.
A favourite with golf fans throughout Asia, the Hawaiian-born player has struggled with her form recently, not helped by a string of injuries and only made the field thanks to an invitation from title sponsor HSBC.
“It feels good to play without much pain. To go out there and just play some golf and focus on my game rather than trying to finish out rounds. Putting myself in a position, it’s always exciting to be on the top of the leaderboard or near the top of the leaderboard,” she said.
