The APGC Senior Amateur Championship, the Asia-Pacific’s premier team and individual championship for senior male golfers, has been cancelled for 2020.
Given on-going travel restrictions prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic, officials have called off the event that had been scheduled to take place in late November.
Taimur Hassan Amin, chairman of the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation, said: “The safety and well-being of players, officials and all those at our host venues are an over-riding priority.
“I know that senior golfers from around the region will be disappointed with the cancellation of what is one of the most popular events on our annual calendar. However, due to the uncertainty that remains regarding travel and quarantine, we felt it was unrealistic to proceed with the event this year.
“I have always enjoyed taking part in the APGC Senior Championship and look forward to playing in as many senior championships as I can in the future. Last year’s APGC Senior Championship in Malaysia was a wonderful week. The Malaysian Golf Association and Sungai Long Golf & Country Club were very gracious hosts, ensuring all the participants had a fabulous event.”
At Sungai Long, New Zealand successfully defended their team title, coming from behind to overhaul their rivals from Australia on the final day. The best four daily scores in each six-man team count towards the total.
With a 54-hole total of even-par 216, New Zealand’s Stuart Duff claimed the prize as the leading individual, one shot ahead of compatriot Peter Brinsdon with Australians Greg Rhodes and Ian Frost in a share of third place on 219.
The APGC Senior Amateur Championship is part of the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation’s portfolio of events that also includes the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific, Nomura Cup, Queen Sirikit Cup, APGC Junior Championship Mitsubishi Corporation Cup, Bonallack Trophy and Patsy Hankins Trophy, and the Asia-Pacific Open Diamond Cup Golf on the Japan Golf Tour Organisation schedule.
