Malaysia’s Ashley Lau is all geared up for her debut appearance in the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship, which tees off at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, California on July 16-21.
“I’m very excited … it’s a great opportunity to play against the best juniors in the world in such a big event,” said the 18-year-old, who earned her place in the prestigious championship via the qualifying event at Vista Valley in San Diego on June 26.
Maintaining her excellent form, Ashley followed up with a win in last week’s FCG World Series Champions Cup at Pala Mesa Resort. She carded rounds of 72 and 70 to edge compatriot Liyana Durisic by one shot. Malaysians also dominated the boys’ event, with Adam Arif Madzri winning the title and Muhammad Afif Mohd Fathi claiming third place.
Ashley credited her fine run to an intensive stint with coach Fergal McGeown in her hometown of Bintulu, Sarawak recently.
“I had a week of intensive training with coach Fergal that helped me with some minor problems … I have also worked on keeping my mind quiet on the course and focused on every shot,” noted Ashley.
“I have one more event and then fly up to Poppy Hills to acclimatise and prepare for the U.S. Girls’ Junior,” she added.
The U.S Girls’ Junior consists of two rounds of strokeplay with the top 64 and ties progressing to the match-play stage.
