Malaysia’s Natasha Andrea Oon has been named to the Women’s Golf Coaches’ Association (WGCA) Second Team All-America honoree list.

The San José State University (SJSU) freshman enjoyed a standout year on the US collegiate circuit for her team, dubbed the Spartans, with nine top-10 finishes including an impressive ninth place at the NCAA Championship last week. She became just the 20th women golfer from her college to receive prestigious All-American honours, with the last SJSU freshman to earn All-America recognition being Janice Moodie in 1994.

Oon was also named Mountain West Freshman of the Year and made the 2018-2019 All-Mountain West First Team. She led the SJSU women’s golf team in stroke average at 72.18, which is the third-best average in the college’s history.

“I think it is kind of cool to be an All-American my freshman year. This was something I wanted to achieve in my four years here at San José State. I just didn’t think it would happen this year,” said the 17-year-old on the SJSU Spartans website (sjsuspartans.com).

Spartans head coach Dana Dormann lauded Oon for her fine season. “Natasha is a special player for our program and the country of Malaysia. She represents her country in international competitions including the Asian Games and Asian Pacific Amateur, all while balancing her academics and Spartan golf competitive schedule,” she said.
