Flynn and Oon fly high in Kuching

Australia’s Lawry Flynn and Malaysia’s Natasha Andrea Oon won the men’s and women’s titles respectively in the 117th Malaysian Amateur Open, which came to a close at Sarawak Golf Club in Kuching yesterday.

Flynn finished on nine-under-par, one shot ahead of Singapore’s Low Wee Jin. Oon meanwhile recorded a 72-hole total of 12-under-par, six shots clear of compatriot Alya Abdul Ghany.

Oon’s runaway win pivoted on a phenomenal third round 64 and a closing 75 was good enough to secure the the win for the 17-year-old. Alya closed with a 73 for a six-under-par 282 total, seven shots clear of another Malaysian,Winnie Ng.

“I am ecstatic to win the 117th Malaysian Amateur Open. It’s great to win our national amateur open. I hope to continue my winning streak for the rest of the golfing season,” said Oon, who just completed her freshman year with San Jose State University.

Flynn carded a final round 69 to take the men’s title, just edging Low who finished his campaign with a 70. Indoensia’s Narajie Ramadhan was fourth on four-under-par 284.

Local hero Malcolm Ting, who shared the lead on days one and two, finished tied for fourth on one-under-par with Hong Kong’s Taichi Ko.

Conducted by the Malaysian Golf Association and Sarawak Golf Association, the tournament saw 157 men and 38 ladies from 17 countries teeing off. The tournament began in 1894 at Penang Golf Club and is one of the oldest amateur events in the world.
