Defending champ Ribka Vania of Indonesia headlines strong field for 36th MLAO

95 players from 10 countries will compete for honours in this week’s 36th Malaysian Ladies Amateur Open Championship (MLAO) at Resorts World Awana, including defending champion Ribka Vania of Indonesia and recently-crowned RSGC Ladies Amateur Open champion Winnie Ng Yu Xuan of Malaysia.

Organised by the Malaysian Ladies Golf Association (MALGA), the annual event has a Category C rating by the World Amateur Golf Ranking which is the highest for a ladies event in Malaysia.

“We are proud that this championship is becoming more and more popular and we are able to attract the top amateurs from 10 countries, i.e. Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. To date 95 players have registered with 52 players in the open championship, 20 players in the mid amateur division and 23 players in the senior division,” said MALGA executive director Dato’ Rabeahtul Aloya Abbas. “Out of 52 players competing in the open division, a total of 20 players have a handicap of zero and below, 17 players with handicaps of one to five, and 15 players with handicaps of between six to nine.

“We are thankful for the support from Resorts World, Sapura, Tourism Malaysia, MST Golf, Acushnet, Salam Group, NeoAsia, Spritzer, Only Golf and many others in assisting us to make this event a success,” she added.

Fresh from her win at RSGC on Sunday, Ng will spearhead the local challenge in the 54-hole event which starts this Wednesday at the scenic and challenging Awana course. The other leading Malaysians competing this year are Natasha Andrea Oon, Liyana Durisic, Geraldine Wong, Warda Amira, Siti Zulaikhaa Shaari and Nur Syazani Amalia.
