256 golfers from six countries will converge at Glenmarie Golf & Country Club this September 23-25 for the 36th edition of the ASEAN Senior Amateur Golf Championships, organised by the Senior Golfers’ Society of Malaysia (SGSM).
Players aged 55 and above from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and Brunei will tee off at Glenmarie’s Garden and Valley courses as SGSM plays host for the seventh time. Thailand has the largest contingent with 66 players, followed by Indonesia with 50 and Malaysia with 46. Countries are allocated places based on the membership numbers of their respective senior golfers’ societies, under the auspices of the Confederation of ASEAN Senior Golfers’ Associations (CASGA).
The 54-hole tournament will feature a strokeplay event (gross, nett and team) for golfers with handicaps of 16 and below, as well as Stableford age-group events for golfers with handicaps of up to 24.
The championship’s origins date back to 1983 when the inaugural event was played at Jagorawi Golf & Country Club in Indonesia. Countries take turns hosting the championships, which returned to Indonesia last year and took place at Rancamaya Golf & Country Club in Bogor and Pondok Indah Golf & Country Club in Jakarta.
“Malaysia have won the overall title in the last two editions, in 2017 in the Philippines and last year in Indonesia, so we hope to retain the title on home soil this time around,” noted SGSM president Dato’ Mohd Aini Taib during a press conference on August 26.
Dato’ Mohd Aini added that, barring any changes, the opening ceremony will be officiated by Youth & Sports Minister Syed Saddiq while the prizegiving dinner will see the attendance of Selangor Chief Minister Amirudin Shari.
SGSM vice president Datuk Wira AS Khamis noted that the selection of the Malaysian players was based on the society’s Order of Merit, where points were awarded for performances in competitions over the last six to seven months.
