Malaysia’s Gavin Green has moved up to 17th place on the European Tour’s Race To Dubai rankings following his T12 finish in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.

The long-hitting Green carded rounds of 70, 69, 71 and 65 to finish on nine-under-par at the Education City Golf Club in Doha, four shots behind winner Jorge Campillo of Spain who claimed his second European Tour title in a playoff over Scotland’s David Drysdale.

Green raked in nine birdies against one bogey and a double bogey in a roller coaster final round on the par-71 layout.

The 26-year-old Malaysian No 1 is chasing a spot in this year’s Open Championship at St Andrews through the Race to Dubai. Starts in the 149th edition of the world’s oldest Major are given to the leading five players, who are not already exempt, within the top 20 of the rankings following the BMW International Open in late June.

Green has enjoyed a strong start to the season with top-30 finishes in all six tournaments he’s played in so far, including a T3 finish at the star-studded Saudi International. Last year, he finished 69th in the Race To Dubai, missing out on the season-ending DP World Tour Championship which is reserved for the top 50.

With the postponement of the Magical Kenya Open due to government restrictions on international meetings and conferences brought about by the Covid-19 outbreak, the European Tour’s next tournament is the Hero Indian Open on March 19-22.
