Golfers can expect a great golfing experience when Penang Golf Resort (PGR) reopens for play on Wednesday, May 13, following the resumption of non-contact outdoor sports in the state under the modified Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) implemented by the local government.
PGR general manager M. Johan Abdullah noted that they have managed to get the golf course up to mark and are ready to welcome golfers, despite enduring recent heavy rains of up to 25mm daily.
“Our golf course is contract maintained so maintenance works have been ongoing, albeit on a limited scale, during the Movement Control Order. Intensive work has been carried out over the past few days to get the course ready for reopening and I am glad to say we are well on schedule despite being hampered by the heavy rainfall,” noted Johan.
“Golfers will have the opportunity to enjoy their games on a well-maintained golf course, although they will have to keep buggies on the tracks due to the heavy ground conditions,” he added.
Johan assured golfers that the club is implementing strict social distancing and sanitisation measures following the guidelines issued by the authorities. “All golfers and visitors will have to abide by these rules and conditions. Notices are displayed prominently at strategic locations around the club and we have designed the flow so that there is only one entry point and one exit point,” he said, noting the club’s F&B outlets and changing rooms will be opened on a limited scale fulfilling the government requirements.
Johan was thankful that golf has been allowed to resume as all clubs were hard-hit since the Movement Control Order (MCO) was enforced on March 18 to curtail the spread of Covid-19. “I think most golf clubs had their cash flow badly impacted with the MCO in place, followed by the extended CMCO, so it’s timely that we are finally able to resume operations,” he said.
During the period of the CMCO which was recently extended to June 9, PGR is offering a special package rate covering green fee, buggy (single), insurance and tax at the following prices:

Located on the fringes of the Bertam township in Kepala Batas on mainland Penang, PGR opened for play in 1994 with two 18-hole courses, the East and West. Over the last few years, a massive renovation and redesign exercise was undertaken by the owners, Bertam Properties, to convert the 36 holes into a new and improved 18-hole course, while freeing up land for development.
Crafted by Australian architect Nigel B. Douglas, the par-72, 6532-metre layout tests golfers with length, tree-lined Zoysia fairways, flashed-up bunkers, lakes and huge, heavily-undulating Tifdwarf greens.
