Avid golfers can look forward to an exciting new event in the inaugural Selangor Golf Classic 2020, a 36-hole competition which tees off on September 29-30 at two of Malaysia’s top courses – The Mines Resort & Golf Club and Kota Permai Golf & Country Club.
As part of its domestic tourism campaign, ‘Pusing Selangor Dulu’, Tourism Selangor has joined forces with golf travel specialists Liberty Golf Services to stage the two-day event. Selangor Golf Classic 2020 is expected to attract over 100 amateur golfers from across Malaysia, comprising locals and expatriates as well as golf enthusiasts from government and corporate bodies.
The tournament will comprise two tournament rounds at The Mines (September 29) and Kota Permai (September 30), both award-winning clubs which have hosted numerous international tournaments.
The entry fee is RM999 inclusive of two rounds of golf, with breakfast and lunch at both venues, as well as an extremely attractive goodie bag from Srixon which includes a cart bag, polo shirt, cap and golf balls worth RM1,300.
In addition to the gross contest, the tournament will feature Medal A (handicap 0-12) and Medal B (handicap 13-24) categories where scores will be computed using the System 36 Stableford format. Great prizes await the top performers, while lucky draw giveaways worth more than RM30,000 ensure that even those who didn’t play well would stand a chance to win something. Additionally, there will be two hole-in-one prizes during the final round, a Swiss watch worth RM15,000 and a golf holiday voucher worth RM50,000.
Participants can opt to play a practice round at a special rate at Glenmarie Golf & Country Club. Outstation golfers can stay at the official hotel, Sunway Pyramid, for only RM199 per night. Both offers are valid during the tournament week.
One of the tournament’s highlights will be a ‘Beat The Pro’ contest at a par-three during the final round. For a fee, participants will compete against a professional golfer in an attempt to hit the bull’s eye on the green. Half of the proceeds will go to charity.
Among other activities during both rounds will be booths featuring the tournament’s partners and sponsors including Tourism Selangor, and a dedicated golf clinic for a group of orphans.
The Selangor State Government through Tourism Selangor strives to achieve the 6 million mark in total tourist arrivals in 2020.
“Tourism Selangor aims to penetrate into the segmentation of sports and golf tourism, which poses a vast potential in drawing a significant number of tourists into the state, as well as contributes prominently towards the state’s economy,” said Tourism Selangor general manager Azrul Shah Mohamad during his speech.
“When there are golf tournaments or championships taking place in the state, the contesting golfers, families, and the media will most likely explore nearby tourist attractions. With such high involvement and overwhelming attention, it will certainly benefit the tourism industry in Selangor … and this is one of the fundamentals why the segmentation of sports and golf tourism is one worth pursuing,” he added.
Eushen Ng of Liberty Golf Services stressed that both venues offered superb golfing experiences. “The golfing fraternity can look forward to a great two-day event with great giveaways. We expect the golf courses to be in top notch condition,” said Ng, adding that with international travel still on hold, they will be focusing on domestic events.
The Selangor Golf Classic 2020 will be run with strict compliance to health and safety protocols to ensure the well-being of all involved.
