US Open halfway leader Patrick Reed is looking forward to playing with Bryson DeChambeau in the third round at Winged Foot Golf Club.
“It’s going to be good. It’s kind of one of those things that we go out there, and I think around here it’s not really as much as who you’re playing with because you’re out there attacking the golf course. This golf course you have to think about every little thing; of tee shots, iron shots, putts, everything,” said Reed, who is chasing a second Major title to add to the 2018 Masters.
“You don’t really hang out with the guys you’re playing with as much because you’re too busy trying to figure out how you’re to play this golf course and kind of put it together like a puzzle. I think that’s the thing about the US Open; there’s not as much talking going on as there is other golf tournaments because it’s a premium on every single golf shot. You let up once and you’re going to make a mess of the golf course,” he elaborated.
With most of the field struggling to negotiate Winged Foot’s narrow fairways, thick rough and super slick greens, Reed leads the tournament with a 36-hole total of four-under-par 136 after rounds of 66 and 70, just one shot ahead of DeChambeau (69-68).
Reed noted that his low trajectory tee shots contrast starkly to the sky-high bombs that the bulked-up DeChambeau hits.
“It’s completely different. You know, he sends it to the moon; I hit it underneath the trees, he hits it over the trees! If he tried to hit a driver the height I hit my driver, it would probably kill half his speed. His speed would be down because he’d kind of have to get on top of it.
“It just shows there are so many different ways to play a golf course, there are so many different ways to play the game of golf. He’s kind of showing one way and I show another; everyone is different,” said Reed.
