The inaugural Selangor Golf Classic was a huge success with a full field of 128 golfers teeing off over two days at The Mines Resort & Golf Club and Kota Permai Golf & Country Club on September 29-30.
Organised by golf travel specialist Liberty Golf Services, the tournament was title sponsored by Tourism Selangor, the tourism promotion agency of the Selangor state government. The sponsorship was in line with the agency’s ‘Reset Tourism’ vision, which aims to revitalise the tourism industry post Covid-19 having already taken a step into the recovery phase.
The participants of the Selangor Golf Classic represented a diverse profile of amateur golfers, ranging from avid club golfers, both local and expatriate, to prominent figures from the corporate world and government.
With attractive prizes and lucky draw giveaways on offer, the tournament was keenly contested and there were some great scores signed in. At the end of 36 holes, the gross title went to Hassan Rahmat who carded successive 69s to walk away with a 49″ Samsung LED Smart TV worth RM2,100 and a trophy.
Top spot in the Medal A division went to 12-handicapper Goh Kian Seng, who totalled 75 Stableford points (39, 36) to take home a 43″ Samsung LED Smart TV worth RM1,800 and a trophy.
The Medal B contest went down to the wire with 14-handicapper Magenthiran Thanimalai emerging from a four-way tie to win on countback. He notched 74 points (37, 37) points to pick up a Cleveland HB Launcher Turbo driver worth RM1,990 and a trophy.
In addition to the standard novelty contests, the final round at Kota Permai featured a Beat The Pro challenge at the par-three 14th hole, where golfers who hit their tee shots closer to the pin than touring professional Genevieve Ling received a sleeve of Srixon Soft Feel balls. There were also two hole-in-one prizes, a Corum watch worth RM20,000 and a golf holiday voucher worth RM50,000, which went unclaimed.
The entry fee of RM999 covered the two tournament rounds with breakfast and lunch at both venues, as well as an extremely attractive goodie bag from Srixon which included a cart bag, polo shirt, cap and golf balls worth RM1,300.
To ensure the well-being of participants and organisers, the tournament was run with strict compliance to health and safety protocols.
“The state of Selangor through Tourism Selangor certainly supports various efforts and initiatives to foster sports and golf tourism in the state,” said Azrul Shah Mohamad, general manager of Tourism Selangor. “Tourism Selangor has just organised our very own 2nd Tourism Selangor Golf Tournament on September 13, which was a success. Hence, Tourism Selangor aspires to sustain the positive momentum in sports and golf tourism with the Selangor Golf Classic 2020.”
