Malaysian No 1 Gavin Green has pulled out of the Scottish Championship, which starts today at Fairmont St Andrews, due to a niggling left wrist injury he aggravated during last week’s BMW PGA Championship.
“It’s basically the thinning of the cartilage and some fluids in the joints. I had an MRI done on Monday and got a steroid jab the next day, which helped ease the pain. But when I hit some chips at the practice range this morning the wrist still hurt, so I had no choice but to pull out,” noted Gavin.
“I have not played at all since Sunday, not even the practice round. I just need more time to recover,” added the 26-year-old.
Due to travel and quarantine restrictions, Gavin will skip next week’s Italian Championship and plans to return to action in back-to-back events in Cyprus – the Cyprus Open (Oct 29-Nov 1) and Cyprus Showdown (Nov 5-8), both of which will take place at the Aphrodite Hills Resort in Pophos.
The Malaysian No 1 is currently in 40th position on the European Tour’s Race To Dubai (RTD) ranking, with just a few events to go before the DP World Tour Championship on December 10-13 in Dubai. The top 60 players on the RTD get into the US$8 million season-ender, which will be played on the Greg Norman-designed Earth Course of Jumeirah Golf Estates.
“I think top 60 is more or less sewn up but I still want to finish as high as possible on the Race To Dubai,” noted Gavin, who has yet to make it to the Dubai finale in two previous seasons on the European Tour with his best RTD finish being 69th in 2019.
The 2017 Asian Tour No 1 is still unsure of his plans after the Cyprus events. “There’s a three-week break between Cyprus and Dubai, but I haven’t decided if I’ll return to Malaysia or perhaps head to Dubai early to prepare for the season finale,” he shared.
