Spanish star Sergio Garica has withdrawn from this week’s Masters Tournament due to a Covid-19 positive test result.
Garcia revealed in a statement that he started feeling a bit of a sore throat and a cough after driving back from the Houston Open on Saturday night. “The symptoms stayed with me on Sunday morning so I decided to get tested for COVID-19 and so did my wife Angela. Thankfully she tested negative, but I didn’t.”
This will be the first time in 21 years that the 40-year-old Garcia has missed a Major championship. The enigmatic Spaniard broke though famously for his first Major win in the 2017 Masters, edging England’s Justin Rose in a playoff at Augusta National.
“After 21 years of not missing a Major Championship, I will sadly miss @themasters this week. The important thing is that my family and I are feeling good. We’ll come back stronger and give the green jacket a go next April,” Garcia noted.
A statement from Augusta National Golf Club confirmed Garcia’s withdrawal: “Sergio Garcia has informed Augusta National Golf Club that he will not participate in the 2020 Masters Tournament due to a positive COVID-19 test result.”
