American Dustin Johnson claimed his maiden Masters title and second Major with a commanding five-shot victory at Augusta National yesterday.
Going into the final round four shots ahead of his closest pursuers, the World No 1 had a shaky start which saw his lead cut to a single stroke early on. However, Johnson turned on the style and carded a closing 68, which included three successive birdies from 13 to 15, for a Masters record total of 20-under-par (65-70-65-68). Korea’s Sungjae Im (70) and Australia’s Cameron Smith (68) shared runner-up honours on 15-under-par.
2019 champion Tiger Woods made a septuple-bogey 10 at the par-three 12th after finding water three times, the highest score of his PGA Tour career on any hole (previous: 9, No. 3/R3/1997 Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide). The 15-time Major winner then birdied five of his next six holes to finish T38.
“It still feels like a dream. As a kid, you’re dreaming about winning the Masters, having Tiger put the green jacket on you. I’m here and what a great feeling it is … I couldn’t be more excited,” said Johnson, 36.
