Montblanc High Artistry Heritage Egyptomania Limited Edition: Bringing to life the mystery and beauty of Ancient Egyptian culture

The Montblanc High Artistry Heritage Egyptomania collection – made up of five different precious writing instruments – explores Ancient Egyptian civilisation, using many different techniques to revive some of its most magnificent treasures: stone cutting and setting, hand engraving, lacquering, elaborate goldsmithing and gold sculpture.

Montblanc leans into its own heritage and its historic fascination with Egypt to create this edition. The so-called Montblanc ‘Egyptian Fountain Pens’, featuring an octagonal shape and Egyptian style engravings, were introduced in the 1920s during the height of Egyptomania, a fascination with all things linked to ancient Egyptian civilisation. At the peak of archaeological adventures and discoveries including the excavation of King Tutankhamen’s tomb, Egypt captured the world’s imagination and would have a one of the strongest influences on the world of arts and intellectual life around the world.

The sarcophagus of King Tutankhamun, one of the most important discoveries from ancient Egypt to this day, is a marvel of craftsmanship and beauty. The overall shape of the writing instrument is reminiscent of a sarcophagus and features the distinctive octagonal shape of the new Montblanc Heritage Egyptomania edition.

Each writing instrument is encased inside the elaborate sarcophagus like a treasure, with a special cap mechanism to open and close it the sarcophagus. The cap top of the sarcophagus of the Limited Edition 1 and Limited Edition 5 versions is inspired by the Uraeus Serpent that adorns the crown of the kings and queens. The cobra symbolises power and royalty, while the special falcon centre stone setting represents divine kingship. The scarab on the cap top is a symbol of immortality and rebirth in ancient Egyptian religion. The cap of the sarcophagus is embellished with a set of real hieroglyphics that illustrate the word ‘Montblanc’.

Limited to just one piece worldwide, the precious edition is inspired by the treasures of the sarcophagus of the kings and queens of Egypt. This blue creation set with blue sapphires, lapis lazuli and Egyptian turquoise features a blue lotus flower reminiscent of the lotus found in Tutankhamun’s tomb on the writing instrument. The unmistakable blue striped pattern on the beard of Tutankhamun’s death mask covers the barrel of the writing instrument set with blue sapphires.

Reminiscent of the richly decorated gold exterior of Tutankhamun’s sarcophagus, the edition showcases the gold work and engraving know how of Montblanc artisans, with intricate depictions inspired by objects found in his tomb, including the king’s gold hunting knife sheath. The hieroglyphics featured on the edition are taken from a passage of the ‘Book of the Dead’ by Hunefer, a royal scribe who lived during the 19th century (1300 BC), one of the most important findings in Egyptology as it provides insight into the “trials” that needed to be completed in order for an individual to reach the afterlife during the ‘Judgment Scene’.
