Gavin Green settled for a joint 74th place finish in the ZAR19.5 million (approx. US$1.27 million) Joburg Open at Randpark Golf Club in Johannesburg, South Africa, yesterday. He moved one rung up into 41st place on the European Tour’s season-long Race To Dubai rankings.
Gavin opened strongly with rounds of 66 and 71 to comfortably make the halfway cut, but fell back with weekend scores of 76 and 74 for a three-over-par total. The joint European Tour and Sunshine Tour event was won by Denmark’s Joakim B. Hansen with a 19-under-par total.
The Malaysian No 1 noted that he is still getting used to some swing adjustments made with coach Chris O’Connell to help manage a niggling wrist injury.
“Happy to have made the cut, though the last couple of days were not really one of my better performances. Trying hard to get used to the swing tweaks and executing it on the golf course. All I can do is keep at it, keep practicing and keep working smart to get better,” he posted on his social media channels.
Gavin will remain in South Africa this week for the ZAR19.5 million Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek Country Club in Malelane, following which he heads to the Middle East for the US$1.2 million Golf in Dubai Championship presented by DP World at Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Fire Course.
Gavin’s 2020 campaign will end with the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah’s Earth Course on December 10-13. This will be the long-hitting Malaysian’s first appearance in the season-ender, where the top 60 players on the European Tour’s Race To Dubai rankings vie a whopping prize fund of US$8 million.
This is Gavin’s third full season on the European Tour, where his final Race To Dubai rankings were 85th in 2018 and 69th in 2019.
