Golf industry comes to the aid of veteran professional S. Murthy following recent brain surgery

The Malaysian golf fraternity has been quick to respond to the plight of veteran professional S. Murthy, who recently underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour.

The Malaysian Indian Golfers Association (MIGA) has initiated a fund-raiser for the ailing golfer via direct donations. Meanwhile, retail giant Transview Golf started a campaign whereby for every PG shirt purchased for RM100 from their outlets, RM20 will be donated to Murthy and family.

The 50-year-old Murthy is one of the professionals who helped conduct MIGA’s junior golf programme in Selangor and is also a member of Transview Golf’s Team PG. Hailing from Banting, he is a multiple winner on the local circuit and represented Malaysia while an amateur in the early to mid-1990s.

MIGA president SP Maniam noted in a message sent out to the association’s membership: “I would like to bring to the attention of all state presidents and associated members regarding the condition of our Selangor junior programme pro Murthy who recently underwent a major surgery to remove a brain tumour on 19th February 2021 at Manipal Medical Centre Klang. He has been stricken by this tumour for the past few years to the extent of requiring surgery for his well-being and survivability. This fatal condition can potentially result him in losing his life, therefore undergoing surgery was essential.

“Since this major surgery involves his brain, there is a high probability he might not fully recover, and in the event that he does, the recovery process is both time and money consuming. Therefore, financial assistance is primarily needed to aid his challenging journey for currently ongoing treatments as well as subsequent follow-up treatments such as physiotherapy.”

Transview Golf’s Kevin Yeap noted: “We are deeply saddened by Murthy’s misfortune and hope that this initiative will help alleviate the financial burden on him and his family. All of us hope and pray that his recovery goes well.”

Four years ago, the golf industry also came to Murthy’s aid when his family home in Banting burnt down. MIGA and Transview Golf were both involved in that initiative, a fund-raising golf tournament at Templer Park Country Club dubbed Home Start Charity Golf.
